Race Day!

Well instead of getting up early, putting on my running gear I had laid out the night before and taking off with the rest of the nutters (including my friend Lisa who flew down for the race) I spent my morning flat on my back, heating pad in place and choking back 2 Advil every 4 hours.  So not the way I had planned to spend the day.

At some point in the last week I seemed to have tweaked my back.  I don’t know for sure (haven’t had an x-ray) but I’m pretty sure I’ve slipped a disc…again.  At least that’s how it feels.  It started Wednesday when I got out of the car and needed to hold on due to the pain. Then it went away.  Then is started every time I got up and then to even when I walked.  Then to constant and ever increasing.  Then it was Saturday.  That’s when I decided I wasn’t running and got a little depressed.  I mean I’ve battled a cold and a broken toe and completed my training in the allotted time, so I deserved the race.  But in my place, Rob ran for me.  On the plus side, he ran a personal best and I couldn’t be more proud!  One hour 2 minutes.  He’s now got it on his brain that he wants to beat an hour.  I’m sure he can do it but he has to finish his marathon training first.

Rob and I have tried to train together in the past but inevitably someone gets hurt.  Last weekend we ran together…and it apparently was my turn to be injured.  And I’m glad it’s me because my race was only a 10k, his marathon is a little more training involved.  So I’ll take one for the team!

Now my goal is to get back to…well walking first…then to running.

So I’m putting my half marathon hopes on hold while I get healthy…again!

To Rob, thank you for all your support and for stepping in and completing a personal best 10km!  I’m so proud of you :)

To everyone else thanks for reading and being there with me.  So for now I’ll rest up and keep getting stronger and doing the other thing I’m good at, baking/blogging at Trilogy Edibles.

Until next time!

Week 5–Day 4, 5 and 7–some tennis, pump class and a 10k!

I’ve been both good and bad this week.  Good with keeping up with my working out, bad with blogging about it.

It’s the week before Halloween so it’s crazy around here.  But the costumes are now done, cookies baked, candy bought and pumpkins are carved!

In all that I had a tennis lesson on Thursday.  After my abysmal playing on Weds night, it had to be done.  Then Friday after all cookies were finally decorated I went to body pump and then today (Sunday) I ran 10k.

View from the path:

Today I started running with Rob and his running partner Gary.  I ran the first 3 miles with them and then turned back.  They ran 15 miles today, I just 6.  I felt bad for leaving them…NOT :)

I ran the American Tobacco trail and it was really nice.  However, the weather has turned to fall with a vengeance so has gone from 70 to 38 in two days.  I was running around this morning looking for mittens.  I just haven’t had the time to find the warmer running clothes.

But I got it done and I felt great.  But now it’s 9pm and I’m really tired.

Last week to go before the big race.  I’ve run it once, twice should be a breeze!

The Music:

Only for half the run and I forgot to get it off the iPod.  But it was pretty good this morning.

Until next time!

Week 5, Day 3–3 mile run and some tennis, if you can call it that :(

I got up and ran 3 miles!  whoop whoop.  Then I spent the better part of the day decorating cookies.

Then this evening I  went and played tennis, oh my it was so pathetic.  I couldn’t hit a good shot if the racquet was twice as big.  But we had fun and then I came home and ate a cupcake and the balance was restored!

I have a lesson tomorrow, so hopefully that will help.

I shall persevere and keep at it.  One week left until the race and then to choose my half.  I know I said I was going to run the Disney Princess but Lisa and I may choose another one.

The music was good for my run but I had to plug it in to recharge it and my list was erased.

Until next time.

Week 5, Day 1–3km baby!

You’re probably thinking two things.  One, she ran? and two, she ran!!!

My toe didn’t bug me much over the weekend so I thought I’d give it a go and victorious, 3km achieved.  Not without a bit of a challenge from a week off and the continuous thought that my toe should hurt, but it didn’t.  So just a long run behind but should be able to make up no problem, I’ll run 9km this weekend and then the race the following weekend.  YAY!  fingers crossed nothing else goes wrong Smile

View from the path:

Just me because I didn’t want to take Dartagnan if I only made it to the end of the street and had to turn around, he’d have been way to hyper.  So just me and the beautiful weather.  It was a chilly start to the run, about 50 but with the sun out I warmed up quick.  I love running in this weather!

The Music:

  • Beth – Glee
  • Supermassive Black Hole – Muse
  • Neighbourhood #4 – Arcade Fire
  • Satellite Mind – Metric
  • Jacob’s Theme – Howard Shore
  • You and I – Lady GaGa
  • Dream On – Glee
  • Firework – Glee

Until tomorrow.  I have tennis tonight and then Body Pump in the morning!

Week 4, Day 5–Body Pump and a winner!

I kept going back and forth whether I would go to class today.  My toe is a loverly shade of purple and it’s spread to the top of my foot.  The swelling is down but still quite sore.

But I went.  I had to modify some things and completely omit the lunges.  For some muscle groups I use a split stance with my left foot back so today I had to put my right and boy it was weird!

I got through it!  Today was also the launch of the new release and the three instructors dressed up for Halloween as an angel, devil and a fallen angel.  They also gave out door prizes and guess who won one????

That’s right…ME:)

I won a 25 dollar gift card to an Italian Eatery.

In the end I’m glad I went to class.  Both because I feel better, but also because I get dinner out!  On the plus side of breaking ones toe, the lunge track was brutal.  Glad I got to miss that one or I wouldn’t have been walking at all this weekend due to the pain.  Now it’ll only be with a slight limp.  I was also excited because I could put my runners on.

Until next time.  I doubt I’ll attempt a run this weekend, maybe next week.

Week 4, Day 1 & 2 and an unfortunate break

Hey all, I’m into week 4 and feeling pretty good.  I ran my 7km (4.5 mile) on the weekend and my goals seems achievable.

Well it did, right up until yesterday afternoon.

First I will admit to working out both Monday and Tuesday.  Monday was tennis.  I had wanted to go for a run as well but spend the morning dealing with the bank and them believing I had stolen my social security number.  There are two and half hours I’m never getting back.  All is resolved, at least for now.

Tuesday I did a body pump class.  Loved it, felt strong when I finished.

Then I came home…

Last week I cut the tip off my thumb whilst chopping apples, then yesterday I was just walking through the family room into the kitchen when my baby toe hit our rocking chair.  There was some screaming and profanities that made Rowan tell me that that wasn’t nice, but sometimes you just can’t stop yourself.

So now my toe is 3 times bigger than the other baby toe and a beautiful shade of purple…and yup it’s broken.

Now I’m that person who’s wearing socks with sandals because I can’t put my shoes on.  The socks are b/c it’s cold.

Now I’m hoping the pain lessens in the next couple days and with some tape I’ll be back to running next week.  I have two weeks until my race, so I should be able to run by then but I may or may not be able to run it all.  Ah well, it does feel, however, that it only ever happens to me :)

I’ll still be going to Body Pump on Friday but probably not  my tennis lesson tomorrow.

Heal baby heal!!!

Thanks for visiting!

Week 3, Day 5 & 6–Body Pump for a Cause & 4.5mile run

Well week 3 has come to an end and I’m still on track!  Yesterday I did 10 minutes on the treadmill and then a Body Pump class.  If you read my other blog, Trilogy Edibles, you’ll see what I did.

It was a hard class too, this week’s theme was the State Fair which is on for the next two weeks.  It’s weird here, the State Fair is a big deal, unlike at home.  Everyone goes.  So if you do pump where you are then you’ll know that when I say we did “firework” for the lunge track, you know how I’m feeling today. Legs are sore.

Today I had to do my long run.  I normally run on Sunday but Rob is running, so I had to do it the day after pump.  So I ran 4.5 miles or 7.2kms.

View from the path:

Today’s run was tricky. Not because I was tired or sore, well I was but that’s not why it was tricky.  It was tricky because I had to make my run 7km.  So I started out and when I got to a spot, I would look at the GPS and determine where I had to run next to add on. Now what I thought would be enough wasn’t, so I had to do that three times.  It was mentally tougher because I hadn’t thought it out before.  But I got it done!

The Music:

  • The Edge of Glory – Lady GaGa
  • Shooting the Moon – OK Go
  • Bleed it Out – Linkin Park
  • Over the Rainbow – Glee
  • My Immortal – Evanescence
  • Let Love Be Your Energy – Robbie Williams
  • Paparazzi – Lady GaGa
  • Ours – The Bravery
  • Oh, The Boss is Coming – Arkells
  • Speechless – Lady GaGa
  • Misery Business – Paramore
  • Alejandro – Lady GaGa
  • No Cars Go – Arcade Fire
  • Born This Way – Glee
  • Hate on Me – Glee (this was my stretch song)

Until next time!

Week 3, Day 1 and 3–Tennis and a 5km

Ok so not as good this week as the last two but sometimes you just need to take a break. On Monday I only played tennis, didn’t want to over do it like last Monday.  I was also still in a turkey coma from our Thanksgiving meal on Sunday, so I played dismally.  It was embarrassing.

Yesterday was a day where my body spoke to me and said, please leave me alone.  Most times I actually don’t listen and feel better after but yesterday I listened.  I did nothing, well I baked cookies but physically I did nothing.

Today I decided to go a little longer and made it 4.5 km (2.8miles).  I dropped both kids at their respective spots this morning and then ran the bigger block.  I also decided to run the path in behind the big hill.  I thought maybe it would run around it but nope, it’s just a rolling incline which in the end was not easier.  I’m not sure which I prefer at the moment, the one big uphill or the rolling.  I’ll let you know tomorrow as my legs will tell me as the day progresses :)

View from the path:

I ran in the rain!  For those who know me know I don’t run in the rain.  I’ll run in the snow, deathly cold and crazy hot, but I don’t run in the rain.  Today I did.  I got up, put my running gear on and then took the kids.  I was all ready to go, so I just kept going.  It didn’t rain long but I was damp when I got home.  I didn’t take Dartagnan this morning and he was not happy about it when we left.. He normally doesn’t bark when we leave, today he went nuts.  So when I got home, we went for a walk.

The Music: it was with me today, thank god!

  • Monster – Lady GaGa
  • Telephone – Lady GaGa & Beyonce
  • Loser – Glee
  • Neighbourhood #3  - Arcade Fire
  • Somewhere Only We know – Glee
  • Can You Feel It – The Jacksons ( I don’t know why but I love this song!)
  • Taking Chances – Glee
  • Heart of the City – Arkells (awesome Canadian band, a must have)
  • Eyes on Fire – Blue Foundation

Until next time!

Week 2, Days 5 and 7–5km(3.2mi) complete!!!

Well I did it, longest run so far in months.  5km or 3.2 miles(pick your poison!)

I also did workout on Friday I just forgot to blog about it.  I did a Body Pump class.  Lisa (instructor) decided to do a breast cancer pink theme and chose every Pink song which are usually pretty brutal.  I am still sore.

Then that night Rob and I went to the tennis club social and played tennis.  Well he played, I was pathetic.  I never played doubles, I play singles.  I don’t understand it but I’m trying.  We got killed 0-6 first set then we changed partners and split up.  We met the kookiest couple, they were great.  My partner, Joe, and I won 6-4 and it was much more fun.  I still didn’t play well.  Then Joe offered to play a short set of singles for fun.  I didn’t win but I finally played tennis.  I could hit the ball the way I wanted, place shots etc.   My serve actually went in.  I lost 1-3 but it was a ton of fun.  It was great to get out!

Today was the long run of 5km.  It wasn’t fast, it wasn’t pretty but I got it done!  I went alone this morning because I needed to run on my terms not Dartagnan’s.  He’s still not talking to me.

View from the path:

It’s also a good thing he didn’t come because I almost got hit by a car twice.  Once when I was crossing on the light and the person wanted to turn left.  He honked at me and then kept coming because traffic was coming towards him.  Jackass!  The second was a car didn’t stop at the stop sign but at the corner.  Good thing I was paying attention because god knows she wasn’t.  Missed me by inches.  If Darty was there he’d have got hit.  It certainly kept it entertaining.

The Music:

It was against me.  Great songs came on but all on the slow side.  So I had to stop and put on the girls dance songs to boost my morale!

  • Alejandro – Lady GaGa
  • The Resistance – Muse
  • Can’t Always Get What You Want – Rolling Stones
  • Pretending – Glee
  • Somewhere Over the Rainbow – Glee

This is where I couldn’t handle another slow song

  • I Like That – Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull
  • Dynamite – Thaoi Cruz
  • Rain Over Me – Marc Antony and Pitbull
  • Give Me Everything – Ne-yo and Pitbull

Week 3 – Bring it on!

Week 2, Day 4–tennis lesson

hey there all.  Today was my tennis lesson day and I only needed to take a break once. So much better than my first lesson 3 weeks ago.  It’s a great workout running around the court, so much different from just running forward.

I’m enjoying being back on the court and having great encouragement by the tennis pro as well as my family. It’s great!  I especially enjoyed going into the proshop to pay for my lesson and having the lady behind the desk ask if I was Karen, from Monday night quads.  I said yes and her response was, “oh, I hear you’re good”.  Ego boost!

Tomorrow is another 3km run and body pump!  Then the big 5km (3mile) run on the weekend.  It’s not Rob’s 16 mile run, but it’s still a big one :)

Until tomorrow!

Week 2, Day 3–3km angry

Never run angry.

That would have been good to realize this morning, because I did.  Rob got up early to run and didn’t wake me up.  I had a bizarre dream and when I did get up and realized the time, I was already off.  I ran into Abby’s room and scared the crap out of her because I was behind.  I threw clothes at her and then into Rowan’s room.  She was sleeping at the foot of her bed and was cranky (which isn’t unusual).  Then Rob meandered in to “help” but I told him to get moving himself.

So I found myself yelling a little more this morning.  Girls are off to school, Rob to work, I need to run.  Or so I thought.

My legs were heavy, I was angry and it felt like I hadn’t run in a month!  I hate that feeling.  But I did it!

View from the path:

Dead thing is still there, it’s so gross.  But at least it doesn’t smell. Plus trying not to cry I was so angry but by the time I finished I seemed to feel much better.

Music:

  • Leave Out all the Rest – Linkin Park
  • 18 Wheeler – Pink
  • Scheibe – Lady Gaga
  • Unnatural selection – Muse
  • Hearing Damage – Thom Yorke
  • All These Thing That I’ve Done – The Killers

Week 2, Day 2–nothing!

I had plans to go to the gym but after my run, body pump class and two hours of tennis last night, I’m tired so I’m doing nothing today. Ok, well not nothing.  I’m getting ready with all the baking required for Canadian thanksgiving!

Until tomorrow!

Week 2, Day 1–3km and a pump class!

Well I didn’t run this weekend, I ate instead :)

Back at it today, I went to the gym and ran 3km on the treadmill and then I did a body pump class.  I only did one class last week and my body missed it.  No doubt I’ll be sore tomorrow! Especially since I’m playing tennis tonight too!

View from the treadmill:

I hate running on the treadmill because it truly is boring.  You don’t go anywhere. However, the people watching is most excellent.  There was the sweaty guy behind me who is on the treadmill for a couple hours each morning.  He’s pretty rank, so I’ve learned to not go on the treadmill next to him if I want to save my olfactory senses :)  But gotta love his dedication!

There’s also a Zumba class before the pump class.  I’m amazed to watch, b/c I’ll never attempt.  Sometimes knowing ones limits is essential!

The Music on the treadmill:  I needed peppy music this morning so used the girls dance mix!

  • I Like That – Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull
  • Dynamite – Thaoi Cruz
  • Rain Over Me – Marc Antony and Pitbull
  • Give Me Everything – Ne-yo and Pitbull
  • Breakaway – Lemonade Mouth

Week 1, Day 5, August 30, 2011 - 3km

I did run this morning and yesterday I played tennis.  I didn’t feel the need to blog about it yesterday because really I just ran around the court for an hour during my lesson.  But it was an awesome workout!

As for today, I ran the loop with my training partner Darty and it was delightful.  The temperature has finally dropped and was down right pleasant out there.  My run was better but not great.  Still I got out there!

View from the path:

The dead whatever was still out there but that was about it.

The Music:

It was good but then the girls got a hold of it and it’s several hours later, so I don’t remember the exact list.  sorry

My goal is to run once this weekend too!

Week 1 Day 3–Sept 28, 2011 3km!

Who was the spaz who decided to come back to running after a month off during the most humid week of the year???  oh yeah that was me :)

Well to say that this mornings run was soupy, than I’m not sure that’s enough to describe it.  It was gross.  I mean I’ve described runs before as like running through a cloud but this morning was worse and I couldn’t before imagine how.  But I did it, it wasn’t straight through, but ah well.  3km is harder than I remember lol

View from the path:

Today I walked Abby up to the bus then Rowan and I crossed the street and she went to daycare.  I love the convenience of it all.  Some days I even walk Rowan home from daycare with Dartagnan! crazy.

I started my run from Little Treasures and ran the block.  But because of where it is located, I ran the loop backwards which always makes for an interesting run.  Your landmarks are off and of course what’s normally uphill is downhill and vice versa. And that too makes for a challenge, especially in this heat.  I decided not to take Darty which was probably a good idea.  I did take him for a walk of our street when I got back, so I could cool down (which wasn’t possible, so muggy!)

I’m now 3 days for 3!!!  First week is always the easiest, it’s keeping it up for six weeks, now that’s the challenge :)

The Music:

  • Safety Dance – Glee
  • She’s Not There – The  Zombies
  • Thanks for the Memories – Fall Out Boy
  • Teenage Dream – Glee
  • The Catalyst – Linkin Park
  • Closer – Nine Inch Nails
  • Any Way You Want It – Glee

As you all know I love me my Glee but I gotta say I’m a little disappointed so far with this season.  I love Rachel and Kurt but what about the rest of the cast?  Where’s my Finn, Puck and Arty??? Or just a group number? I’m just saying!

Until tomorrow!  Tennis lesson is on tap. Here’s hoping my shoulder is good to go!

Tuesday, September 27, 2011

Week 1, Day 2–Sept 27, 2011

So last night I played tennis and didn’t embarrass myself.  After my lesson last week, my confidence was back.  I actually won several of my service games, with the help of my partner of course.  However, during one serve I seemed to have tweaked my shoulder.  It’s more of the “you haven’t done this in a long time what the hell are you doing to me” pain, than having actually hurt myself.

Now to this morning, I took a body pump class.  Because of said “tweak” I decided not to aggravate it, so instead of anything overhead, I did dead rows.  So if you’ve taken a body pump class before you’ll know that with the 4th track (clean and press), I did a stellar number of rows!

Tomorrow I run! 3km

Until then :)

Week 1–Day 1 (Sept 26, 2011)

I did it! Can I just leave it at that?  no, ok.  It was ugly, but I knew it was going to be.  I mean what did I expect after over a month since the last run.  I ran 3km, just the around-the-block loop and Dartagnan came with.  He was a happy puppy this morning!

It was a bit different than normal too because instead of going before everyone got up, I waited until all were off to school and work.  I’ll have to get use to that! It was a nice temperature too, but the humidity was gross.  ah well, tis the south :)

View from the path:

There are more people out at this time than at 6am.  No other runners but many more cars.  The biggest shock was the dead unknown animal on the sidewalk.  I say unknown because I think it’d been there a while.  I had to take a wide berth on it as I’m sure Dartagnan would have loved to have given it a good sniff.  I know, gross.

So I’m glad I ran, now to keep it up.  On the plus side, my feet didn’t hurt!

The Music: The music was on my side this morning, I so enjoy when I can sing to the music.  It makes the awareness of the pain go away LOL

  • River Deep Mountain High – Glee
  • Welcome to the Black Pearl – My Chemical Romance
  • Pullin Punches – Arkells
  • SOS – Rihanna
  • Starlight – Muse
  • Wake Me Up Before You Go Go – Wham!
  • Nine In the Afternoon – Panic at the Disco

OK, here I go again!

image

So what you’re seeing here is my registration for the Raleigh City of Oaks 10km on Sunday November 6th at 7am.

oh yeah baby, here we go again.

Since the whole foot thing I’ve not run at all and then I got the “back to school” cold that neither of my girls got so I think I got both of theirs.  Almost 10 very long days of hell.  Last week was my first back to the gym and I was pretty good and worked out everyday but Thursday.  I’ve also gone back to tennis too. Played twice last week.

My friend Lisa, who I ran the marathon with, is coming to visit that weekend and we’ve decided to give the 10km a go.  Rob would have joined but he’s in the midst of his marathon training. He ran 10 and half miles this morning!

So just 6 weeks away.  First run tomorrow…wish me luck :)

This would not be the best time frame for a 10km, but it’s also not my first.

This is my plan:

Week 1 – 3km
Week 2 – 5km
Week 3 – 7km
Week 4 – 9km
Week 5 – 10km
Week 6 – 10km(race)

here’s hoping for no colds, no injuries and no hurricanes/tornados/earthquakes :)

Until tomorrow!

An unfortunate break

So I’m not not working out, I am, just a little differently these days.  About two weeks ago I started getting foot pain in both feet.  %$#^%&$!!!! was pretty much how I felt.  Lot’s of expletives as this isn’t my first time dealing with plantar fasciitis. Where the tendons in your foot become inflamed.  So I stopped running for a week then got new runners (they are so pretty) and new everyday shoes (to my husbands dismay, not so pretty).

IMGP8056

These are Saucony Progrid Stabil shoes.  I’ve had this “style” of shoe for almost 12 years.  They are awesome for us who pronate pretty severely and have wide feet with really thin heels.  These are also the men’s version because the women’s 10W isn’t wide enough.  I know I’m an oddity! I love these shoes, I hope Saucony keeps making them as long as I continue to run (here’s hoping for a long time).

So now that the girls are back at school I’ve been hitting the gym.  Monday I ran on the treadmill (not a ton of pain but still aware of it), Tuesday I took a Body Pump class and today I did a Body Step class.  Sadly my right food is still not happy.  I’m icing it while I type.

I’m heading north to Toronto and Ottawa for a week with Rowan and not taking my running gear with, kind of a forced break.  Here’s hoping my foot is grateful and the pain goes away soon!

It’ll be another week until I post, fingers crossed things get better.  I’ve got lots of time to register for my race!

Thanks for stopping by!

August 22, 2011 - 3km

I’ve not been good, I’ve been bad actually.  We’ve had a few cakes made around here and I’ve partaken in more than I should.  I also started to get really sore feet.  Like really sore, to the point it hurt to put them on the ground to stand up.  Over the weekend they started to get better so I put the shoes on this morning and took to the path!

View from the path!

I was up and out before 7am this morning.  Me and Darty went out and it was muggy.  Not hot, muggy.  I saw two runners this morning!  When I got home I was sweaty and purple!  We will see how the feet feel later today.  It may be time for new shoes!

The Music:

  • Castles – The Philosopher Kings
  • Get it Right – Glee
  • Hearing Damage – Thom Yorke
  • Lean on Me – Glee
  • Gold Gun Girls – Metric
  • Footloose – Kenny Loggins (oh please you all love this song!)

Until next time!

August 18, 2011 - 3km

40’s the new 30 and baby you’re a rock star! – Pitbull

You’re right I was suppose to run yesterday but my legs have been achy the last few days.  So today I got up and left both Rob and our early morning guest (Rowan came in at 5:30am) out cold in bed. That’s always hard, especially when they looked so cute.

View from the path:

I ran the 3km loop with Dartagnan.  It was really muggy out this morning.  My legs were still sore on the run but every time I tried to take a walk break Dartagnan would grab the leash and pull.  But I got it done.

The Music:

It was against me I kept getting slow music.  I think I may have to get a new iPod remote Timex watch as I had to stop, remove it and change the songs.

  • Express Yourself – Glee
  • It’s My Life – Glee
  • Hurt – Nine Inch Nails
  • You Can’t Always Get What you Want – Rolling Stones

This is where I had to stop and play with it

  • I Like That – Enrique Iglesias
  • Rain on Me – Pitbull (hence the quote)

until next time!

Tuesday, August 16, 2011

August 15, 2011 - 3km

Yes I ran but forgot to write about it.  It was a lovely run and I even got to take my running partner, Dartagnan, with me!  It was nice, only 70 out.  I just ran the small loop.  Felt much better today, muscles still a little sore.

View from the path:

OMG I saw another runner.  A rare sight indeed.

The Music:

  1. I Like That – Enrique Iglesias
  2. Dynamite – Taio Cruz
  3. Rain on Me – Pitbull
  4. Breakthrough – Lemonade Mouth
  5. Raise Your Glass – Pink

Until Wednesday!

A trip to the gym and a revelation

Hop on over to my other blog (Trilogy Edibles) for the backstory.

Today I went to the gym for the first time in 2 months.  It was soooooooooooooooooooo needed!

I ran 2 and half miles on the treadmill then I did a Body Pump class.  I’m going to be so sore tomorrow. YAY!

Soreness aside, I’m so proud to be apart of this blogging community.  One of us lost a loved one so suddenly this week and we’ve come together to make peanut butter pie.

IMGP7906

So the workout aside, workout, don’t workout but do make this pie or something you love for those you love!

3km at 6:30am

It was an early start today as it’s the first day of camp.  For Abby, not me.  However looking at their itinerary, I wanna go to camp and she can do my jobs!

I did my 3km loop and yes it was easier but even at 6:30 it was warm.  The sun wasn’t completely up so I didn’t have to wear my sunglasses, which was good because with this humidity my eyes were able to breathe.

View from the path:

The run was a good one even with the last little hill which had me swearing the entire time.  It was when I got home that the real swearing started.  I was getting out of my clothes to take a shower when my back went “tweek” and then I swore profusely.  I know this feeling, so today I’m going to take things very gingerly.  I know without weight training and ab work my lower back hates me and today it just made its point.  I shall endeavor to appease the “back” gods and be kind to it so it won’t affect my routine.

The Music:

It was angry chick music this morning, which was good b/c when I got home I was an angry chick!

  • Stronger – Britney Spears ( I know but sometimes it’s the song not the artist and I use that term lightly, that helps get through the tough spots on a run)
  • The Only Exception – Paramore
  • Forget You – Glee
  • Misery Business – Paramore
  • Telephone – Glee
  • Wake Me Up Before You Go Go – Wham! (Ok not angry chick music, but a nice fun song to end with!)

thanks for coming! until Wednesday

August 4, 2011–3km and a good sweat!

Day two again!  I always feel like I’m starting over. I really should just bite the bullet and keep it up, but then life gets in the way :)

Today I ran 3km, same as Tuesday.  It’s just around the block and it’s hilly and it was about 90 at 8am.  I tried to get Rob to come with me because he’s been as bad as I have but he just grunted at me. So I left him in bed and went without.

It was hard, I had to stop twice for drink water and to douse myself with water to stay cool.  When I was done I had a really good sweat on, it was gross but felt good!

View from the Path:

Not much, I’m the only crazy out there :)

The Music:

Ok, so I got home and put my iPod down.  Big mistake as little hands got a hold of it and changed where I was but the music was just ok today.

There was Muse, a couple songs from the Twilight soundtracks, and a Lemonade Mouth (Breakthrough) song.

Until Saturday!

Back at square one…again :(

So have you ever gotten up and said I don’t want to run but knew you should, well that was this morning.

Hi there I’m back after 3 weeks of pure and utter gluttony.  I’m sure I’ve gained a 100 pounds (ok maybe 5 but it feels like 100) and generally feel like crap.  We spent 2 weeks in Oakland with Rob’s sister Catherine, where I did run once :) and then just spent the weekend walking around Washington DC (my feet are tired), but it’s still not regular routine so all four of us are just fried.

So now I’m back…from outer space (LOL sorry couldn’t resist). But I am back and ready to get back on the healthy train.  The vacation was great, the food fabulous and didn’t drink as much as I’m sure I could have, now it’s time for reality.

Four weeks until school starts – it really is the best time of the year!

View from the path:

So I went out at 8am, a little later than I should have but after the night from hell, it was all I could muster.  Both kids woke up twice and one time was for a wet bed, so good times all around… NOT.  I still got up and went out.  It was hot.  Now when they told us when we moved we’d have great mild winters, what I totally didn’t take from that was that the summers were stifling.  I mean I’m a Canadian after all, I like it a wee bit cooler, 20-30 degrees cooler.

My run was tough, not going to lie and most of my inner monologue was interspersed with four letter expletives. It was 3kms and 20 minutes.  Slow but steady.  I do feel better for it and it’s several hours later and I’m still sweating!

I solemnly swear to continue with my healthier eating and exercising at least 3-4 times per week b/c I have a race to run in less than 6 months!

The Music:

  • John Lemon – The Arkells
  • Let Me Sign – Rob Pattinson (yup the guy from Twilight)
  • Hero of War – Rise Against
  • Wake Up – Arcade Fire
  • Proud – Heather Small (so needed that at the end)
  • Marry the Night – Lady Gaga

Thanks for looking!  Until tomorrow :) at least that’s the plan…

3km and on vacation

Today the girls woke up at 6am UGH, so I got up.  Seriously 3 time zones doesn’t seem like much but my body is wrecked.  Yesterday I was joking with friends about running and one said that she ran like Pheobe from the TV show Friends and I said that so do I occasionally.  Today was one of those days.  At least that’s how I felt.

But I finally decided to go after about 3 hours, a couple cups of tea and a protein shake.  So I put on my shoes and away I went. I think around 2 miles, at least it was 12 mins out and 12 back,

View from the path:

Rob said to go out and turn left.  I did and the path immediately stopped.  I thought Rob wouldn’t send me out to run on the road so I kept going and found the path a little farther up.

Welcome to Oakland, the land of hills.  It’s even worse than at home.  It’s crazy.  At least I had a down hill to start, of course that meant an uphill home.

Not much to see but the hills around Catherine’s new digs are beautiful.  It was also great to run when I wasn’t sweating before I started running.  It was a loverly 70 degrees.

The Music:

Got my run mix back!

  • Sing – My Chemical Romance
  • Ours – The Bravery
  • Somebody to Love – Glee
  • Use Somebody – Kings of Leon
  • Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters – Elton John
  • 18 Wheeler – Pink
  • Paparazzi – Lady GaGa
  • Only Girl - Rihanna

July 12, 2011 - Feeling Hot Hot Hot

Well today we leave on vacation and yes I got up and went for a run. Holy cow it’s muggy out.

Now the great about running is that no matter how many time you run the same run it’s never the same run.  Especially when it’s 85 out at 7am.  It’s suppose to get to 101 today.  Good thing we are heading to California to cool off!

View from the path:

Well today we mostly thinking about all the things that need to get done, mostly what to pack for the girls b/c god forbid I forget something precious!

The Music:

  • Loser Like Me
  • Faithfully
  • She’s Not There
  • Total Eclipse of the Heart
  • Somewhere Only We Know
  • Don’t Go Breaking My Heart
  • Somebody to Love

My plan is to continue to run in Oakland, we’ll see if it happens won’t we!

July 11th, 3km!

One more day until vacation and my plan is to run today and tomorrow before I get on the plane.

So for today…check!

View from the path:

Not so much of a view but more of a pondering.  Today I was thinking of my friend Kim from Recipes To Run On and her latest blog.  She reveals her current pause in exercise due to an unknown injury and her taking stalk in the other things!  It made me a little introspective about my past challenges with running and that being able to run at present without pain is a blessing and shouldn’t be taken for granted.  I mean we all try to be good to ourselves with diet and exercise but as we get older (ugh) it gets a little harder.  It’s not as easy as it use to be.

So today I think of Kim and wish her well and am thankful for everything in my life, especially these faces:

5km baby!!! yes with the hill :)

First off I’d like to define humidity.  According to Wikipedia it is a term for the amount of water vapor in the air, according to me it’s the most difficult weather to run in.  I’d rather run in the rain and that’s saying a lot since I’m so the fair weather fan!

As I was lying in bed this morning the guy on the radio said it was 76 out.  I thought I gotta go because that’s beautiful for running.  As I got outside it wasn’t bad but as I proceeded on my run it got soupy fast.  Now although I hate running in humidity I had it in my brain I was going to run 5km and that’s what I was going to do.  I started therefore I finish.

To be honest, although I was dripping as I ran, it wasn’t a bad run at all.  I came prepared this morning and ran with water.  I took my first water break just before the first up hill and then after the second hill.  It really was like running through thick wet air.

5km accomplished in about 33 minutes and I’ll take it!

I then came home and took Dartagnan for a walk.  He was so happy!

View from the path:

It’s amazing to me that no one around here runs in the early morning.  I would think that the best time.  I only see runners mid-day.  Crazy people.

The Music:
I didn’t put my run mix on yet but that’s ok because I’ve been rewatching season two of Glee this week.  There’s nothing on tv these days.  So I kept what was on the iPod and put it on shuffle.  The songs were for me today and by that I mean they were good singable tunes!

  • She’s Not There
  • Dream On
  • Only The Good Die Young
  • Hey, Soul Sister (this was great for the hill)
  • Stronger (that’s how I felt at the top of the hill)
  • Bad Romance
  • No Air
  • One

the walk:

  • You Can’t Always Get What You Want
  • Forget You
  • More, Than a Band (Lemonade Mouth)
  • Lean On Me
  • Halo/Walking on Sunshine

Body Step today…it’s been a while

Well today I went back to the gym and did a Body Step class.  On a plus I didn’t fall off the step.  It’s been two weeks since I did this class and wow I felt it.  Even with the running, it’s a different type of workout.

But I made it through!  I was purple, but I did it.

View from the Step:

Well this class is a fun class.  Normally Shannon teaches but she’s on holidays this week.  We had another great teacher for whose name I can’t remember.  But I got there right at 9:30am and the right side of the gym was full and where my step was, I was alone.  Let me explain because it wasn’t my fault.  We had two ladies join the class a month or two ago that were off beat and when you are behind them it’s hard to stay on beat.  So with every new class the participants migrated to the other side.  Now they don’t come to class and still everyone is on the other side.

The music was all about the diva’s today.  There was no speed step track today. We did two party tracks.

Happy July 4th! 3km run this morning

With all the baking recently I had to force myself out of bed this morning and go for a run. I dragged Rob’s sorry ass out of bed too!  He really didn’t want to go but then neither did I.  But we went.

We ran the 3km loop and although it was really hot, it didn’t seem as hard.  I remembered to bring water and promptly at the 10 minute out mark I told Rob I had to stop and needed water.  That was without being told it was 10 minutes.  Lots and lots of training.

So the run wasn’t bad and there was a nice breeze.  However, when we started on the final stretch home the breeze was directly in our faces.  Why is that????? no matter where I run in the world, why does the wind always have to blow into my face on the home stretch :)

View from the Path:

Just me and Rob!

No music today.

Happy 4th of July!!!

Not quite 5km…went well until it went bad :(

Rob is training for a marathon so have been in his routine for a couple months now.  Today he was running 5km and asked me if I wanted to go.  I said no, but went anyway.  I mean it’s my third run and may have been a little overly optimistic.  But we got up and went, good little runners!

I do love running with Rob, it’s a lot of fun.  Usually.  The last time we ran was in October when the tables were turned. I was the one in running shape and he was just getting back into it.  The difference is Rob likes to tell me “when I started…” or just “when I…” which is meant to be supportive but doesn’t quite feel like that when you feel like you’re going to fall down.  I actually got mad at him this morning because I needed water and started to get cold.  I knew I had to stop and then he told me it was just mental.  I lost it!  Probably over reacted but …

View from the path:

So this 5km has the most evil hill on the planet. On the plus side, I ran it completely but then had to stop.

It’s Canada day and the Canadian Geese were out.  They were out yesterday too.  At least today they didn’t try to run me out into traffic.  They were being patriotic!  LOL

No music today, it’s just rude to run with it when running with someone else, however today I could have used it!

Just in case you’d like to see my Dartagnan!  He again was not pleased with being left behind but alas, it’s for his health.  Miss my running partner!

3km and a return to reality

So why is it that when you go out for a run after several months off you feel invincible and then when you go out for the second run reality sets in and you realize you aren’t immortal???

Well that’s exactly how this morning’s run went.  I went out and did the same route but everything ached.  Not in a bad way like my hip but in a “what the hell are you doing?” kind of way.  I thought the first 10 minutes were never going to end.  Once I hit 10mins my body finally gave in and got into a rhythm and finally started to feel OK.  I guess I’ll continue…

View from the path:

Well Cary is a lot like Kanata except for one thing … HILLS.  I freaking hate hills and they are everywhere.  I mean I honestly don’t think it’s flat anywhere, it’s all incline or decline.  Another similarity is that we live in a little pocket of houses like in the Marshes in Kanata and we are also surrounded by light industrial so while out running, there is no one else.  It was a bit cooler today but even if it was 78 instead of 80, it was still HOT!

The Music:

For those new to my blog, I make no excuses for what appears on my iPod, especially this morning.  I haven’t put my run mix back on so I had the pleasure of running to the kids music selections.  Glee!

I’m back!!!

Well I’m back and I have a new goal.  I know you’ve all been waiting for what I’m going to do next.  Well…Disney Princess Half Marathon on February 24th, 2012.

Today I ran for the first time in months.  As you know after the marathon in January, my hip has been a royal pain in my side. Pun intended!  I’ve been really good with going to the gym but I’m in need of some cardio and a little motivation.  So today I ran.  I really have missed it and while out for my 3km I realized how much I enjoyed it.

Sadly my running partner has had to hang up his leash.  Dartagnan does not like the heat at all and here in North Carolina, it’s 80 at 6:30 in the morning!  He wasn’t happy about being left behind but this is for his health.  He will be missed.  Rob may run with me occasionally but he’s training for the Memphis full marathon in December and as you know, I’m never ever doing that again.  Been there done that!

So for those who don’t know me, I blog about my thoughts while running, I share what I see and let loose my inner monologue.  I also share what’s music is playing on my iPod.  Not today though, as it was really about if I COULD do this again!  Fingers Crossed.  So I hope you’ll join me again on the next year and as I go 40 and Beyond!!!

January 9, 2011 - THE DISNEY MARATHON

At The Start

Today was the day, the final day of the journey I started a year ago to run a marathon. How am I feeling after you ask? Well the answer is this...crap!

Most of you wouldn't be shocked by that answer I'm sure. Why anyone would want to run 42.2km or 26.4miles is craziness, lunacy, all out mental deficiency! and I heartily agree. I always knew it was going to be hard, but what I never fully appreciated and/or respected was the sheer mental and physical breakdown your body undertakes as it covers that distance.

I loved the fact my race number ended in 40!

View from the path!

At 3:15am the brain alarm went off. The "I don't want to miss the alarm and therefore gets up 45 minutes before needed" wake up! I made the standard oatmeal breakfast and followed it with a banana. I had laid out my clothes the night before and was ready and waiting at 3:45am. Lisa was also ready to go and my mother was up for support. She hasn't missed a Disney race yet!

Lisa and I were off to Epcot! "All runners must be in their corrals by 5am or they won't be able to start". Well I guess we weren't the only ones who though that was bogus b/c when we hit the park there were about 1000 cars in line to get in. At least this time I didn't get lost and end up at the Magic Kingdom parking lot and have to take the monorail to Epcot. We parked and walked to the runners area. This is where it hits you, the sheer magnitude of the Disney experience. I mean the race kit pick up was grande, but when Disney does anything, they do it spectacularly! They are a well oiled machine and what makes it even more special are the 1000 or so volunteers and cast members who are out long before the runners get there and set up and direct us lost souls where to go.

Pee break, just use one of the 600 or so port-o-potty's ! Now off to the corrals. Lisa and I were in corral E (5hour). It's about a 20minute walk to the start line, hence why they want you there early.

5:35am: Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Donald come out to cheer on the crowds and the fireworks go off in true Disney fashion. Wheel chair racers are off and each corral follows with 5 minutes between. In a flash we are off and across the start line. Lisa and I find it a bit slow to start but once we get into Epcot we get our stride. Feeling great, feeling strong. Around Epcot and into the back park. The first 10km (6miles) go by in a flash. Mile 6 to 8 are hard but only because there isn't much to see as you run the roads between Epcot and Magic Kingdom. You enter Magic Kingdom at mile 10 and in my opinion one of the best parts of the race. Running down Main Street towards Cinderella's Castle with all the spectators lining the street is an awesome boost! Running past Space Mountain and the Tea Cups, passing characters along the way.
STOP - Woody and Jesse from Toy Story were out in Frontierland. We stand in line, get to the front to take our picture and Jesse goes on break. I so would have been a rockstar if I had had my picture taken with her, but I guess Woody will have to do! On we go!

2hrs and 27minutes: we come out of the Magic Kingdom and cross over the half way mark. Good time and feeling OK but for my hip. I decided to stop at a medical tent for some biofreeze (best stuff on the planet). It numbs the area, it's unfortunate that my hamstrings start to get tired at that point too. Into Animal Kingdom and around Mount Everest (where the previous day Lisa and I rode the roller coaster) now we are running around it while others are coming down the mountain.

STOP - Picture with Minnie of course!

Coming out of Animal Kingdom are the best spectators in the world (at least to me). Rob, Abby, Rowan and my mother were there to cheer us on. At this point the sun was up and it was getting hot so I took off a layer and dropped off my sun glasses because they kept fogging up and continued on our way!

With each mile my body started to break down. I've never had this happen before in any sport I've ever done. I was slowing down and eventually had to shorten my run/walk times. We passed the 32km/20miles marker and I had a full mental breakdown. I called to Lisa to stop and just started to cry and tried not to throw-up. I couldn't go on at least I didn't want to. But Lisa was amazing and got me running again. I'm not sure I would have continued, at least I wouldn't have run. I would have walked the last 10kms (6miles). With each step I felt so many things. I hurt, I was tired, I felt gross and above all I was pissed at myself for not being able to complete something I spent the last year working towards. I was ashamed and that's what I used to get my legs moving. Basically yelling at myself (internally) to get my ass moving and cross that finish line. Interspersed within the expletives were moments of utter despair. Lisa kept changing the running plan. First it was 10 and 1's, then it was 5 and 1's and then it was 2 and 1's etc. And that's what we did!

The last 5km (3miles): Can't say that I remember it completely but I do remember entering Epcot and knowing this is where we finish. Even that didn't motivate me to keep running. The Mickey Mouse Medal, the faces of my family and most of all Lisa kept me going. I think I cried with each step and as I looked around I wasn't the only person experiencing this emotional/physical roller coaster. I could see the big dome but it was all the way around the world. More and more spectators were around and as they yell out your name telling you that you are awesome and almost done certainly did help (so if you've ever been a spectator at a race, we really do need you too). Just before the finish line we go into the back park for about 200meters and then through the gates to the stands and the finish. It honestly took everything in me to make my legs move and start running. But what was this, all this applause and support and my legs started to pick up a little speed (don't kid yourself, it wasn't much that anyone would notice) but I did. We could see it now and with a high five to Goofy and Donald we crossed the finish line. My body found the last bit of energy I needed.

With a hug and a cry, Lisa and I just held each other. She was amazing and I know there wasn't any way I could have done this without her. At least not in 5 hours and 9 minutes (yes I beat Rob's PB :)

And there it was, the most beautiful medal I've every seen.

I'd like to thank everyone who's taken this journey with me and supported me. I've never felt so much love from just trying to attempt something before I turned 40. The emails, text messages and Facebook messages that came in within minutes of us crossing the finish line made all the pain go away for a while, at least until I tried to sit down, or get up or move in anyway. LOL

It's two days later and my body still hates me. The muscles are starting to loosen up but the electrolyte imbalance still lingers. I think I'll take the week off :)

Three weeks until I turn 40, now what?

January 4, 2011 - 5km

3rd last run before the big race on Sunday. I can't believe I'm in the same week as the race. Holy cow it's been a wild ride. Today was my recovery run from the 16km on Sunday. 5km with Darty around the mid-loop and it was ok. Nothing special or to write about and didn't as I'm writing on Weds.

View from the path:
Birds, birds and more birds. Herons, Ibis and Cranes are all over the golf course

No Music - got out and then realized I wasn't wearing it, ah well.

4 days to go!

January 2, 2010 - 16km

Today was the last long run before the big race next Sunday. Have you ever decided on a route, go out and run and when you are done didn't go as far and you thought and then couldn't mentally go any farther? That's what happened today.

View from the path:
I went down to the marina and then ran to St. Armands Key, out to the Mote Museum and was to head back. But When I got to the Mote it was only 6.7km and since my plan was to run 20, that wasn't far enough. When I got back to St. Armands Circle I altered my course and I headed out towards the beach. I ran to the end of the road and decided to turn around. I mean if there is no more path, then the running gods have spoken. So I headed back to the marina. I was going to keep going past the car to make up the added distance but once I saw the car my body just shut down. I mentally couldn't do it. So 16km will have to do. The run was ok, freaking hot and with all the salt in the air, the sweat in the eyes was even more painful than normal. I was a nice shade of purple when I got back to the car.

In the 30 years of coming to Florida this was the first time I've ever run/walked across the bridge from the mainland out to the keys. It truly was a great feeling.

Next week is the final destination for this year long adventure and I can't wait! A couple more short runs this week and then off to the happiest place on earth. Thanks for coming along with me!

The Music:
as usual lots of music and too many to list here.

January 1, 2010 - first run of the year!

January 1st! Just 8 days until the insanity! Went out this morning for a 3km run and boy was it hot! I really hope it's not this hot next Sunday. Darty and I ran together and his tongue was down to the ground by the end.

View from the path:
Saw a few more runners out today, all sweating like crazy! Darty had fun with all the squirrels out!

The Music:
Only the Good Die Young - Glee
Notorious - Muse
Ballad of Hugo Chavez - The Arkells
White Demon Love Song - The Killers
Misery Business - Paramore
Uprising - Muse
Full Moon - Black Ghosts
One - Glee

Tomorrow - the plan is to run 20km but with this cold, I will go out and run as far as I can. It'll be a nice run along the waterfront in Sarasota (not sure about the bridge). I will let you know!
